I know this question comes up every once in a while, and the answer is very simple, you will notice that the sealing faces are differences between the two generations.

Gen 2 is on the left - flat sealing face for separate cupseal disc, for use with 2k2 or Empire poppets only

Gen 3 is on the right - tapered sealing face for integrated poppet head, for use with Alias poppets only

You cannot mix and match between different generation poppets and sleeves.

Other than the sealing faces, all other dimensions are identical between the two generations.

Here are the different poppets,

2k2 poppet and 2k2 cupseal:

Empire Poppet:

Alias poppet:

As you can see the Empire and Alias poppets look very similar.. there is a small difference in the size and design of the different white "cupseals" if you look closely though..

So what you are saying is if you have a gen 2 and want to upgrade to some gen 3 internals gen 3 you have to upgeade BOTH The poppit and the ram sleve?

Yes. I've run empire poppets in two of my 2k2 style timmies so that's an alternative to buying an alias ram sleeve and alias poppet.

Squirlly: That's indeed correct, you've got to match the poppet and ram sleeve from the same generation (or as lewdogg21 mentioned - use an Empire poppet in the 2k2 sleeve)

I'm the kind of guy that trys to break things down to the simplest terms..
In the Navy we called this "Marineing" the explination

When it comes to paintball gear I'm very VERY comfortable taking a Tippmann apart and I believe I could take a Model 98 apart, clean and oil the thing and put it back together blind folded and it still work.

I take my Timmy to someone else most of the time except for the very basic cleaning/lubeing (Thank GOD someone once said on there there is no need to lube the poppit as long as you lube everything else it will get enough lube) becase well elecros hate me....

i dont mean to blow solid facts, but i've tested an empire poppit on an alias ram sleeve and it worked. didnt go and play a day with it but it did hold the air and fired.

That could be, since the Empire poppet is more like an Alias poppet. But generally its always been a rule of thumb to match up the poppets and sleeves.

Thanks for the facts crankwalk, never really thought about what the differences are. There is no performance/efficiency gain from running an Alias ram sleeve compared to a 2k2 ram sleeve, correct?

No performance gain that I've heard about or noticed myself. The swap to an Alias sleeve would be just so you could use an Alias poppet because the design is better than the separate 2k2 poppet/cupseal disc. But then again you can just get an Empire poppet and keep your 2k2 sleeve...

OK, that is what I thought.

I know this is an older thread, but could someone post comparison pics of the 2k2, empire, and alias poppets?

funny you say that because I am a Marine and I could take apart and put a timmy together maybe faster than you could with a tippman LOL

and the best gun tech I know is a Former Marine (retired I think too) :P
