View Full Version : Where does your username come from?

Ok, this has always attracted my attention. Where do people’s usernames come from? Is there a story behind their elaborate username, or is it literally something plucked out of the air. So, do you have an interesting story as to why you chose such an interesting username?

I’ll start off.

My username is KeenDean. It goes back some 15years to when I was completing the final year of my 5 year mechanical engineering apprenticeship. Back then we had a log book detailing all the relevant engineering competences we had to be trained and knowledgeable in. It also detailed various types of equipment we had to know how to work on and repair. By the way, I work as a design and maintenance engineer for a large international chemical company.

Anyway, you would not be given your ‘skilled’ status and skilled pay level, once you finished the apprenticeship, unless all the categories / competences had been signed off as completed by your engineering supervisors.

So just before my 5 years was up, I had quite a lot of missing categories yet to be signed off. So, to get the categories signed off, I volunteered for the crapiest, messiest, most pain in the arse jobs that came into the workshop so that my supervisor would sign me off for stuff I hadn’t even done.

The other guys in the workshop saw me constantly volunteering for all these jobs and would shout out “you’re very keen Dean”. From that I got a nickname of KeenDean, or sometimes shortened down to Keeno.

To this day, 15 years later, I’m still known throughout the workshop, and out on plant, as KeenDean. I like the nickname and so keep using it in forums, etc…

I've started threads exactly like this one on several forums... I'll go next!!

Well you are what you eat right? Squirrels eat... NUTS right? True but not correct :D

Ok it goes back to 1992 and I was a young seaman in the United States Navy working in the computer room at Naval Air Facility Detroit which was on board Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mt. Clemens, Michigan. My job usually was data entry or what ever other boring task they could find since I was the low man in the office or I was programming since I was the only trained programmer on the entire base (I programed in Pascal, that lasted 3 days in the corporate world).

Well sitting at a keyboard for hours and hours on end required A LOT of Diet Mountain Dew. Well every couple of hours I would get up from my seat go down the hall to the head (restroom) to make room for a new can of Dew, then go to the coffee mess (breakroom) for that can of Dew and return to my desk. Sometimes I would get to a good stoping point in my task and I had a half a can of Dew and really didn't have hit the head but I absolutley had to get away from my keyboard for a few moments so I would just get up out of my seat and take 2 or 3 "laps" around the office then sit back down and go right back to work. One day durring one of my laps around the office my Lead Petty Officer was just standing there chatting with the Chief (R.H.I.P. , Rank has its privilages) andway I heard my LPO say "He looks like a caged squirrel" everyone in the office laughed and it stuck like GLUE. From that point on I was "Squirrel" or "Squirrel Boy" or "Seaman Squirrel" people actually one time thought I was wearing someone elses uniform since the name stenciled on my Dungarees was not Squirrel.

Once I was out of the Navy I was looking for a clown name since I was training to be a professional clown and the guy teaching me asked if I had a nickname and I told him about "Squirrel". After acould of variations that made a better name Squirrly came up. Looking at that option I said "I'm a clown and I'm looking for a name not a description, Squirrly is 'Squrrel Like' but 'Squirlly' will still make people think Squirrel Like but it's MY name and can't be found in a dictonary. So I've been Squirlly since 1993.

Its amazing how funny the word Squirrel looks once you read it and say it over and over. lol

definition of crankwalk here (http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/answers-terms.htm#whatiscrankwalk) and it came about because because I owned a 2nd Gen Mitsubishi Eclipse which is notorious for crankwalk... I guess I was tempting fate with that one :D

Mine is pretty simple. I've been a big fan of Subarus for quite awhile, mainly due to a love for rally racing. I went nuts when the WRX was finally released in the US back in '01 ('02 model). I own an '05 WRX now and have a partial stake in a '96 Impreza Brighton rally car (co-driver). I've also raced a couple of older '98-'01 NA Imprezas. Spell it how you will, but Scooby is a pretty common nickname for a Subaru. So I took that as a forum name.

The 921 is simply my favorite numbers. Growing up playing soccer I always seemed to be #9. Its just kinda stuck since then. In high school a friend of mine died at soccer practice (unknown heart condition, just finally gave out). In memory of him I started wearing his old number, 21.

Mine is pretty simple...

My last name is Daigle, my hockey buddys got tired of screaming Daigle (pronounced like Bagel but with a D) on the ice so they shortened it to Daigz... my birthday is May 25th, or 525.

Put them together there's my screenname. I used to use it on AIM when I was in junior high and the name just stuck.

Alternatively, on some other websites I use the user name Cheers2Soco. That one is pretty self explanitory too. Southern Comfort is my favorite booze, I say cheers a lot, 2 is easier to type than "to".... Cheers2Soco...

Key word there is "volunteered" when in the U.S. Navy I learned that NAVY is actually an acryonym
NEVER

VOLUNTEER
YOURSELF

and we all learned this the first DAY in bootcamp... where it was too late

Mine is quite simple. Way back when I was registering for a forum (no idea what it was) I needed to think of a user name. I was at my desk and had just finished eating some tasty (yet all to greasy) KFC and happened to look around for inspiration. First thing that caught my eye was was the ever present white envelope containing the obligatory 'Moist Towellette". The rest is history.

Mine is pretty much straight forward. Most of the 'big moves' I make out on the field are usually too little and too late to help win. But I sure do look good doing them.

Just a variation on my names initials GT, which a lot of friends call me by. I log onto a lot of forums (paintball & otherwise) as this so it's kinda stuck.

My paintball team nickname is Lucky but that's usually taken on most forums

Hey battle I'm a fan of Joe's work too. I remember seeing some of it when he drew for Marvel. I believe he used to draw X-Men. His drawings are awesome. I haven't kept up with him for a while but his drawing style astounds me.

As for my screen name, I'm a fan of japanese comics or manga and like the Naruto series. One of his signature moves is called the rasengan. 13 because that's my birthday. I have other screen names I've used for years but this one stuck cuz I wanted to try something new.

So yeah I'm a bit nerdy....
