interesting. SCM3 = $50.
or:
internals $15
delrin piston $10
tool $10 (optional)
edit: tool is not needed. just use small pliers.

Just get the reg itself. Then at least if you try to sell it people know it's an SCM3 and can't ***** you out.
DFSniper
03-18-2009, 06:42 PM
well, you could always sell the parts separately and revert the lpr to stock... or keep it for your next gun.

I wish I had known about this before I bought my SCM III, then again I bought mine for $25.

If you can find the reg used I'd go with it, but in my opinion the stock reg looks better than the SCM III and the conversion works without the piston. You could buy just the Internals for the $20 and still have a very very nice LPR.
DFSniper

yeah, i was wondering about the piston. ive heard people say theres not much of an advantage with delrin, and i was wondering if it would make a bigger diference with scm internals.
and is there a way to get it out without the special tool?
Stewey956
03-18-2009, 08:07 PM
What exactly is the special tool for? That like brass piece?
Tim Foolery
03-18-2009, 08:12 PM
Just to install the brass screw (I have no idea what the technical name is) I found that regular needle nose work (at your own risk) and that fine point needle nose dremeled to an even long point work great.

hmm, i guess needle nose pliers would work.
Stewey956
03-18-2009, 08:20 PM
I've seen a maintenance guide and they do suggest needle nose pliers. Before today, I didn't even know of that special bit. I think at $10.00 though, it should be an actual tool, not just a bit.

well, i checked akalmp, and the scm internals are only $15 on their site. so if you wanted, you could theoretically make an scm3 for under $20, including shipping. i may have to try this out.

anyone else want in? estimated prices will be:
SCM3 internals - $15 (im ordering some AKA stuff, so i'll eat shipping)
PBK Piston - $10 (shipping will be $6.20 divided by number of buyers unless we get 10 or more, then shipping is only $1.)
so you're looking at a total of about $25.50, plus the cost for shipping from me to you (about $1.50) instead of $36.20 if you were to buy it individually.

Ok, got some info to share. Took my Alias, 2k2 & Classic LPR plus my Torpedo apart. The Pin Valve & its retainer will swap out between all the above. Took one retainer down the street to the machine shop to check the threading. Called AKA & got their threading, both are the same. So this is a drop in mod.
Removing the 2k2, Classic & Torpedo's retainer, all that is needed is a 3/8 socket & extension to reach down in there. The Alias will need an extra thin wall socket or a small flat head screw driver to remove/install.
Larry from AKA said be sure to lube the oring on the retainer plus the 2 on the stem.
Here are some pics & a video I did a little while ago.

I just found out I do have a delrin piston for Pre-Alias & Torpedos so all I need is two (2) AKA SCM-III internals.
My Alias has a delrin piston so I will need to find a stock aluminum one to do a full test.

I've shot my SCM with the Eigen and it performed alright.. I think I was running at about 60ish psi though, hard to tell on a 0-300 gauge.
You shouldn't experience many issues, the SCM's are the same basic style as a BL lpr, they just use a different valve + piston. The piston on the SCM is quite wide/flat compared to the factory LPRs.. I'll get a pic in a few.
Edit: Yet more SCM pics

Well, I tested the parts out 2 weeks ago in my Alias (stock LPR & a Torpedo). The AKA springs are to big to easily drop in & the pins are to long. I think DF got his in & working but said they were touchy when it comes to adjusting. Im gonna cut the pins down & use the stock springs.
DFSniper
05-31-2009, 09:13 PM
it works perfectly on the LPR, but ive run into two problems in the HPR. 1) the wall where the spring sits isnt wide enough for the SCM3 spring, and 2) the valve pin is shorter than stock, so you'd need to shim the reg spring more to get the piston to touch the SCM3 valve.

WOW! I can't believe my original post on PBnation generated so much interest over here. Glad to see you guys picked it up and ran. Sounds like some of you have tried this with your LPRs.
What does everyone think? I was running a Hybrid Verdikt (Alias style) LPR with a VP delrin piston before I did this mod. After dropping in the SCM III internals it made a huge difference in my opinion. What results have others had with the LPR?
oldironmudder
06-30-2009, 03:39 PM
I had problems. Springs would NOT fit so I used BL springs & an oring to make up for the height. then there wasnt enough room to fully open the valve. So I cut the pins down. Everything looked good in mock up but leak bad & spiked my lpr to 200+ again (2 times @ 200+ & once at 150 since Ive owned the marker). I said screw it til I have a solid day to mess it.
tjs0349
06-30-2009, 04:56 PM
Interesting. Mine dropped right in and has worked great ever since. That sucks. Maybe it's because I'm using a Hybrid Verdikt LPR housing. I had thought those were the same as the alias though. Hopefully others had better luck...
DFSniper
06-30-2009, 05:56 PM
i like it so far. running the internals & pbk piston with a 2liter+ on my TS, and i should have a verdikt coming in this weekend. ive noticed that the fps range was cut almost in half with the scm3 internals.
tjs0349
06-30-2009, 06:05 PM
Glad to hear! That's the kind of results I've had. I went back and fourth for a long time on getting an actual SCM-III, but I just felt it destroyed the looks of my marker. So I was really happy when I stumbled across this. The combination of the Verdikt and the SCM-III internals gives it great looks and great performance as well!
It was originally a Shocker LPR mod. They would cut off about half of the wide round part on the valve pin.

Sorry to bring life to an old thread, but does anyone have any concrete results from fitting this modification?
I plan on injecting some life into my ST 2k2 project after the holidays, and this mod is one upgrade I'm looking to throw into her.
I plan on fitting one to the LPR, and one in the tornado. I custom made (by hand) some of my own delrin twin o-ring pistons for this little venture.
But is it worth doing? Thats the question.
DFSniper
12-24-2009, 05:03 PM
it works great in the LPR, but because of the design, it doesnt stick out enough for the torpedo piston to hit the valve pin. you would need to shim the piston more, or make a longer piston.
princealway
08-05-2010, 10:56 AM
If you can find the reg used'd go with her, but I think the stock looks better than reg CMS and III of the conversion works without the piston. You can buy just the house for few dollar and still have a very beautiful LPR.
