I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the rails by proto. I am looking into buying one, because they look like they would perform well for what you pay.I was going to get one of the special edition versions that come with a decent trigger, and a nicer feed neck. Does anyone have any opinions about these guns? Share away!

I bought one as a backup gun and now its my main gun. I love mine! Shoots great, its accurate and consistent as hell, and SOOO quiet. I would definitely recommend getting one. Yes, the stock triggers suck, but thats a very minor defect. The stock board has fully adjustable ramp and all the modes you need (including NXL, which they dont tell you about). Very worth the money. Oh, and before I forget, you'll want a new bolt cap because the stock plastic ones are terrible.

THIS IS SECOND HAND INFO BUT... The guy who I bought my Timmy from don't like Dye products and actually traded his PM6 AND a Shocker for an 06 Timmy. He says he don't like ANY Proto markers becasue of maintance and reliability issues but I must say this is ALL SECOND HAND INFO from someone who SOLD his last Timmy to buy an Ego so take the info as you will but I kinda trust him :)

They're decent enough for the price, however, they're prone to leaking and like any spool valve, they're inefficient. They also lack an LPR. When they work, they work well and shoot smooth.

Lopez, what kind of leaking are they prone to, and if I get one then is there any way perminately fix these leaks?
Squirlly- thanks for the input. My good friend who plays on a nxl team had an 05 ego and then got a pmr and pm6 in a trade. He told me that the pmr shot better than his 05 ego. (this could be because of the fact that he never cleans his guns) :)

Poor Dan (The Guy I bought my Timmy from) he's not going to like this... The CLEANEST marker I ever bought from him was a 2005 Pro Stock Autococker which he got in trade and NEVER fired but even then it was gnarly.

What are the differences between the slg and pmr? Does one perform better than the other?

personally i like the look of the pmr better but i have no idea what the differences are, if any. i have only had one leak so far and it was a really easy fix. just lube it enough and you should be fine.

Researched more into the differences and it appears that the slg uses a solenoid and a sear more like a spyder. I'm not sure if the pmr does the same- I dont think it does. Does anyone know if the pmr uses a ram?

pmr is a true spool-valve just like a proto or DM.

the ultralight frame is totally worth it for the rail. The field that i play at will sell a new proto rail with ultralight frame for $250 (in box brand new).
Well worth it

Very good deal, PMR with UL Frame for $250.
The PMR eliminates the need for an LPR with their bolt design.
It's all personal preference, If you like the look and feel, then it's a good gun for you. Dye has outstanding customer service, just as good as BLAST.
One suggestion, look at the PM6, preferably with a UL frame, but again that's personal preference. Price is a little higher, maybe find a good used one for about the same.
The PM6 shares many parts and upgrades with the other DYE markers from the DM4, DM5, 6 and 7. And there are a ton of available parts, both new and used.
The rail is a new design and a lot of the parts are unique and not interchangeable with other DYE markers.

thats what i have been finding in my never-ending search to put every available upgrade on my guns. there are a couple of aftermarket bolts out there but i really see no viable proof that they make much difference in overall performance.
I kinda wish they had gone with a bolt similar to the dye ones so that the top-hat mod actually did something. I tried it on my bolt but i didnt notice much difference, if any. if anyone has tried it and did get results, please hit me up. im curious to see what other people have done.

Dye has listened and made a lot of needed improvements. The DM7 and DM8 don't benefit from the top hat mod either, since it's been built in to the bolt design now.
And I see the same things, aftermarket bolts don't add much in performance.
Have you looked in to an aftermarket board? Tadoa or Virtue?

The stock board has all the firing modes I really need. semi, psp, millenium, and hidden nxl so I dont really feel the need to get a new board. I might if I decide to start playing psp since they made the new bps limit and apparently the stock board starts at 14 bps ramping but whatever.

I have a Rail, and to tell the truth, I put away my Shocker and my Spimmy in favor of it. Out of the box, it's a shooting machine!
In comparison, my Shocker that I shot for several years has every upgrade available except for a different bolt guide. Only that and the body are stock - it was a killer for sure many years and in many tournaments. Out of the box, with the stock frame and trigger, the Rail shot equally, if not better, than the Shocker. There were also some other pluses, but no minuses that I could find.
It is a spoolie (I've always favored 'em - sorry Timmy guys! :D) so it tends to be a bit of an air hog, though I don't have ANY problems with efficiency on mine - I get about 1200-1300 shots off my 68/4500 tank and I'm not complaining about that.
The only upgrades I have on it are the Ultralight frame (IMO, a necessary upgrade, though I didn't dislike the stock frame. I have small hands and the UL frame fits perfectly in my hand, so yeah.) an NDZ back cap and the clamping feedneck collar from my shocker Qlock. The stock board does have the 4 modes on it, and the UL frame only has 3, but they are fully adjustable for ROF. Really, unless you want it, there's no reason to switch the board.
I will admit, it was prone to leaking at first every time I lubed it. However, I figured out that the orings were bad - I think Proto actually got a bad batch of orings and I checked with a local supplier and he told me that they actually do have a shelf life. Once I changed them out, I NEVER had another problem with leaking.
Seriously, if it weren't for the composite frame, this gun would be worth a LOT more money. Unfortunately, the idiots at the Worlds Lamest Forums have flamed everyone and their dog so much about it, that even people who don't like that forum consider it a "Noob" gun, which it's not.
If you have any questions, let me know - I've shot it for over a year now, and I'm not really considering a new gun. (Yes, when I find a gun I like, I stick with it for years, haha!)

I have a PMR and i love it. its very smooth, little kick, and ive found it to actually be pretty efficient. Plus with the new feedneck and trigger, i got rid of two of the stock weaknesses
