IOG Day. Plans, Ideas, etc.

So while shouting in the shout box the topic/idea of having a IOG day/gathering came up. I suggested Las Vegas as the place to meet. Its a tourist town so there will be LOTS of things to do. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, etc. Almost all the airlines fly there. But a place hasn't been decided yet, neither has a date. Sometime next year was agreed upon as being best. To give those interested time to raise the capital needed to go, and to get the time off of work, etc. Any ideas on place, time, etc are VERY much appreciated, and needed.
So let's throw out some things

i'm hell of down. any ideas on hotels? depending on where everyone stays at, there's a small indoor place downtown on flamingo, didn't get a chance to go there before college tho. if people stay out at red rock or something there are two options. one is at a general sports park on rampart road, which was converted from softball fields to pb fields. meh fields and staff but easy for those looking at cheap hotel options and what not, suncoast and rampart hotel/casino are right down the street so great option for those who can't afford to rent a car or prefer not to take on vegas traffic. the other option would be to take a 30min drive out to parumph. largest facility for the vegas area, nice owner, but the drive is kinda long. if i can get down there a few days ahead, i will probably be able to pick some guys up from the air port as well, just depends on when i can leave reno. if anyone needs the names of the fields or have any other vegas questions, lemme know.

Yea when/if I go to Vegas for Spring break in a few weeks I was going to check out the local spots. I know about the one of Flamingo, and the one in Parumph, but Parumph would be pretty far to drive.
But a location(i.e. Town) hasn't been decided yet. Las Vegas is just an idea. It is somewhat centralized, no lack of things to do. And this is an excuse to go to Vegas.

I like the vegas thing, and I could probably get the wife to agree to go out there so I dont seem like a selfish jerk for leaving and going to Vegas for a weekend... Plus its near family so I could have a babysitter for my daughter and could actually bring my wife to play too. I like the Vegas thing, and its the cheapest city to fly to from Minot. If we do this Vegas is the only place I can think of that I would be able to go and get the wife and wallet to agree. I also would need to forecast leave and stuff. So as long as my bosses, my wife, my wallet agree (and I am not deployed again) I think I could probably make it happen.

This idea has been banded around before, but nothing ever came of it. Hell, even I once suggested meeting up during world cup, and I even once suggested a 1-on-1 contest between IOG members, to determine WHO was the best IOG'er to take to a field.

I haven't voted on the poll, because there isn't a category for international members who'll have to endure a 10-13 hour flight to get there.:o

I would lurve to make it over. If it happens, then I'm in. Depending on circumstances. Next year gives me plenty of time to arrange transport, accommodation, and save up some flash cash. The flights will not be cheap, as I'll more than likely have to get a chartered flight. But, there are plenty of flights from Manchester, so no real big deal.

My only concern, is that only a small number of people actually sign up to this. Some of you guys in the states may only have to travel a few hours to get there. International members, like me, will be doing almost half a days flight to get there. Imagine how pi**ed I'd be, if only a hand full of guys turned up.

I should be well established in my new job by then, to allow for time off. The only other issue would be if me and the missus have another baby by then. It could be by March next year, I'd have a 3month old in tow. Imagine trying to tell the wife I'm off to America to play ball, while she's still left holding the baby. I'd be wearing my testicles as a beanie.

Sometime in May, would be my suggestion for a date.

But, provisionally... count me in.

There's something about registering the equipment "with the border'...

A team that I practice with/against play the SPPL, and have had to go across the border a few times now with thier equipment. From what I understand you can get it checked/registered/tagged at the border, but expect to be several hours doing so, or there's offices elsewhere that you can do it before hand. I don't know the specifics though.

Best bet would be to drive over the border, mail it to were you're going to be staying, or to a trusted IOG member who IS going.

There are ways around this, I believe. If I contact the airline days before I am due to fly, I can inform them that I'll be flying with a paintball "gun", they'll inform me of the extra security checks I'll need to go through. I'll have to arrive really early, and hand it in for extra examination and scanning/x-raying as part of increased security screening. It's a hassle, but the only way I'll be able to travel with my marker. The alternative would be to ship it weeks before, to a trusted IOG member.

I know that USA tanks (DOT) cannot be used, filled or hydro tested in the UK or Europe. I can only guess that it would be the same, the other way around with using UK (PYE) bottles in the USA.

So, if this little jaunt becomes reality, I may very well need to borrow someones spare tank.

I'm not bothered where it is. The missus has given me the green light (as long as we don't have a new arrival just before this venues date is decided), so I'm good to go.

Vegas is just a venue where we can have fun away from just paintballin. Some IOG members may not be party animals, so Vegas may be a bit too much for them. But, for me, there's something awesome about walking down the strip, at 22:00hrs holding a yard glass of margareita.

The IOG day is for IOG members to come together and PLAY PAINTBALL(among other non paintball related things). Plus Vegas is somewhat centralized. Cup isn't. Just my $0.02
Also Vegas is an attractant by itself. Age would be a factor no matter where we'd go. If you're too young to drink in Vegas you're too young to drink anywhere.

That's what they use to hold them in one spot. Its an older method versus the newer built-in waterbags, but just as good for their purpose.

I think it would be most beneficial to check out houses for rent as well, and just all pitch in. It might be cheaper.

For us Tim Vegas is an 8-10 hour drive. And Las Vegas is SOMEWHAT centralized, and what I mean by that is it is easy for almost everyone to get to. TONS of flights in and out, and for pretty cheap. It's not some small town that most people would have to catch connections to get to. Not all of our users are on the coasts, a lot are in Midwest. Locations on the coasts would be nice for me if we had the event in Cali, but would suck some major *** if in FL etc, and vice versa. And again, its freaking Las Vegas, everyone loves Vegas. So far for dates nothing has really been suggested. I still think April-May would be great. We'd just miss the spring break crown and be early enough to miss the summer rush. Plus it's tax time so people would be getting their refunds(I've already said this like 4 times lol)
From Vegas to Pahrump is like 1 hour or so.
And those sandbags hold the bunkers down.

For me if the dates that this thing fell on worked out for me I'd rather do Memphis only because it is way closer to where I live and I would be able to drive down instead of having to pay for a flight ticket there and back. Although I think Vegas would be pretty sweet just because it is Vegas and there is so much to do there, just would cost me way more.

I'm thrilled 10 members have shown a key interest in this, if you go by the poll.

Making this an annual event would be cool. I'd suggest getting this one out of the way first. If it's a success, with a good number of participants attending, and if it's well reported/photographed, then I think it could become a successful annual event. If a damn good report is made, then it may entice a few members who were sitting on the fence re-think about attending the next event.

But, it all depends on how this first one pans out.

Someone mentioned in the shout box, getting an IOG team together for an "open" event/tournament. Now that would be f**kin interesting.

But realistically, for me to make the team, and make events would never work. I couldn't commit to training/drills, as it just wouldn't be financially viable.

Turning up to an event with no preparation to working within a team sure would make me the weak link, and I wouldn't risk me costing the team games.

If it was a one off, just for fun tournament, then sure I would be in.

I have a new job starting in a few weeks, that pays a little bit better than my last one. So, I should have some playing funds. Seeing as my old team disbanded, I may look for a amature team to join. After all, I'm pushing 40, and most teams want prepubescent teens as bunker monkeys. If I get with a team, at least I'll get back up to tournament level paintball.

Just looked at flights, using dates this year of Thu 05/20/2010 - 05/27/2010. I'm thinking if I fly out on a Thursday I'll arrive that evening. Book into a hotel, rest for the day, and then meet up with everyone on Friday night. Jet lag and booze... AWESOME. At least I'll have a sound excuse when I pass out at 21:00hrs. Anyway...

If I go non stop from Manchester to Vegas, I'm looking at around £1042.00GBP/$1565.00USD.

If I go 1-stop (Manchester to JFK New York to Las Vegas), with KLM I can get it down to £617.00GBP/$926.00USD.

I won't fly with any of the USA airlines, as they are more likely to be targeted by nasty people :dodgy:.

So, add to those tickets the extra funds I'll need for car hire, spending money, playing funds, etc... it ain't gunna be cheap. But... f**k it. It'll be worth it. I HOPE!;)

looking at paintball popularity by field and shop density area to area, so prime states that seem to be most promising based on paintball density. this has no bearing on whether any of these fields are affordable or enjoyable though,

there is texas, tennissee, chicago/michican area. vegas is also a good choice based on paintball density and the local attraction.

Just a quick update. I've been in talks(emails) with LVPP, one of the fields I plan to check out in Vegas. So far they have said a 2 day event is doable with enough people. I also asked about a bulk order of paint, 1/2 a skid worth(unless we can get enough people to do a whole skid, i.e. enough to shoot 108 cases). The price quote I've asked for is for a 1/2 skid, 54-60 cases. What we would do is have people reserve/preorder their paint so we could get a skid, then get a discount for those who preorder. NOTE: THE PAINT PREORDER WILL BE NON REFUNDABLE. IF YOU DO NOT SHOW UP TO THE EVENT YOUR PAINT STILL WILL.

It's a shame that this thread may have died a death and gathered dust by then. I hope I'm proved wrong. Yes, even us moderators get things wrong from time to time.

I'm thrilled that this is attracting a lot of interest and post count, even if it does go off topic at times.

Bad news. Wasn't able to go check out the fields here in Vegas. Called a few, never got a call back from Combat Zone(called them twice). Couldn't find enough time to drive down there w/o talking with them first.

So this thread got really long, so I haven't kept up with it and don't know if this has been suggested. Vegas is a cool idea, but how about Chicago? Why Chicago? Becuase there are two major paintball events here, and it's a big city with enough non-paintball stuff to keep people occupied. It's also a major transportation hub and fairly centrally located in the country. There are even a good number of casions close to one of the paintball events. While not quite vegas casions, they are pretty nice casions.

The events? Frist one is the Living Legends Scenario/NPPL Chicago Open on Memorial day weekend. A great scenario for the non-tourney players, and a great tournament. Both held together at the same location.

Second one is the PSP Chicago Open/Ultimate Woodsball League Chicago in mid June at the Badlandz (home of Aftershock). Two great tournaments in one location and the woods will be open to the general public for play.

Just my two cents, and yes I live in the Chicago area :-)

You don't think they are going to do those events next year? Why wouldn't they? Living Legends has been highly succesful, and this is it's third year. It grows bigger every single year. With the addition of the NPPL event, it's going to be huge. It's a good venue and I expect this year will be very succesful. Unless it's a flop it's highly unlikely they wouldn't repeat it, and I just don't see it being a flop. Same goes for the PSP event I doubt they will move the location again after just one year unless it is a total faliure.

Sure we will all meet & say hi & probably a few F-Us but like Bill said, it will draw our attention away from us. About locations, the wife & I are planning are planning a trip to Memphis in the June/July time frame. I plan to go to the field just to look around. She gave me the ok to go there & play without her so I might end up doing that but not sure if I can get everything I need into one gear box.

UPDATE UPDATE
So I've still in talks with Combat Zone which is the best field around by the looks of things. Waiting to hear back on paint prices.
