Kila Dirty Bolt Review

Ok here it is, my review of the Kila Dirty Bolt…

I will let everyone know up front that the method that I performed for the analysis of the reduction of kick based on the bolt did not work as well as I thought. Those results are not included in this review.

To analyze kick, I designed a rig from PVC to hold my gun perfectly vertically. I then placed this rig on a specialized kitchen scale. The scale had a memory which would record the largest mass recorded in the past 5 seconds.

I then shot the gun (dry) to determine in the difference in weight due to the kick of the gun. In my defense this method did work to a point. A higher weight was recorded every time that I fired the marker. Unfortunately, I noticed that the marker would jump slightly when it was shot (due to the bolt moving forward) before the weight was recorded. I believe that this eliminated any accuracy in monitoring that I planned to have.

I currently am in the market for a ball bearing track to re-analyze kick. This track is what is typically used by design companies for looking at the kick of markers. Once I have the track I will update this review to reflect those results.

Now for the good stuff, the actual review of the bolts. I used a stock Bob Long Protégé bolt, a Bob Long Pillow Bolt and 2 Kila Dirty Bolts (1 version was a straight bolt with no cuts [identified as “Dirty Bolt 1”], the second had reduced weight because of additional lathing [identified as “Dirty Bolt 2”]).

The first thing that I looked at was the weight of the bolts. The following are the results of this weighing:
• Stock Bolt : 1.32 Ounces
• Pillow Bolt: 1.02 Ounces
• Dirty Bolt 1: 1.01 Ounces
• Dirty Bolt 2: 0.98 Ounces

The second big difference that I looked at was the air intake for the bolt. The stock bolt was the smallest air inlet of the bolts tested. This model is by all means the simplest and is a basic oval design. The Pillow bolt has the largest air inlet and is shaped like a trapezoid with mirrored heights. The Dirty bolts have a small oval inlet which is nearly the same size as the stock bolt air inlet.

The next point that I looked at was the impact zone of the bolt. This is the area which contacts the paintballs when firing. The stock bolt uses just the outside diameter of the bolt. The pillow bolt uses a “pillow” made out of a pliable rubber. It is the most flexible pillow between the pillow bolt and the dirty bolt. This area is set forward to be flush with the outer diameter of the bolt so the first thing that is contacted is the pillow. This pillow can and has come out of the bolt. When this happens BLAST can replace them however they are a pain to replace. Interestingly, the dirty bolts had 2 different types of pillows. The Dirty Bolt 1 had a pillow that was slightly larger than the Dirty Bolt 2 and extended further towards the front of the bolt. The Dirty Bolt 2 had a smaller diameter pillow which was set further back. The design of the Dirty Bolt 2 did not allow the pillow to actually contact the ball when set in place. Both dirty bolts use a stiffer pillow. It seems like more of a piece of plastic than a formal pillow as the BLAST version has.

Chrono testing showed a slight increase in FPS. Following data is from testing and is the average of 20 shots using each bolt. The marker was disassembled, cleaned and lubed after each 20 shot testing.

Stock: 286.6 fps
Pillow: 289.2 fps
Dirty: 293.1 fps

I used a handheld chrono to perform the testing. Consistency was relatively the same on all bolts but the standard deviation of the results were within 1.5%. This minimal error can be attributed to the chrono's accuracy.

I do not know anyway of testing efficiency. I can say that the higher FPS average from the dirty bolt means that the pressure could be reduced slightly (in theory).

As far as lube versus oil, just a personal preference. The first dirty bolt that I got was slightly tight (as was discussed) and needed a bit of lube to function consistently.

There are 2 things that make the dirty bolt very different from all other bolts available for the vice/protégé. The dirty bolt does not use any o-rings as do all other bolts available. The design uses an extremely small tolerance to obtain sufficient seal for the air to flow through the bolt. This is a two sided coin in my opinion. The elimination of the o-rings means that lube can be used easily without concern for swelling o-rings. I personally have been using the new Kila Ice Lube. It works really well on the bolts; it is slightly thicker than standard DOW-33.

The second difference with the dirty bolt is pin. The pin uses magnets to keep the bolt pin in place. The BLAST bolts both use a spring and ball bearing to keep the pin installed. The Dirty bolt uses magnets which both keep the bolt open when pulled up and is kept in place down when in place.

All in all I have to say that the Dirty bolt is a really nice bolt. If you currently use the stock BLAST bolt it is worth the upgrade as it is slightly easier on paint and has an awesome pin.

The down and dirty now, the bolt is around $50 (I think). It is well worth it for the cost in my opinion, it is a great bolt. If you do decide to pick one up make sure that you ask Rob (with Kila) to test the bolt on a vice/protégé. Since they don’t use o-rings, the tolerance has to be extremely good. If it is too tight the bolt will stick (as my original version did), if it will too loose the marker may leak air.

There it is, my Kila Dirty Bolt review. Pictures of all the bolts and what I talked about will be posted shortly, I need a better camera for closer shots.

Excellent review Daigz, I actually read the whole thing.

Kinda bad how the bolts have to be tested, which is going to make ordering online tough.

I thought about that. I don't order anything "online" I always pick out what I want then call the people.

And Kila has AWESOME customer service and they'll make sure that the bolt is perfect for ya!

Oh so you make them personally pick the stuff up and ask questions about it?

Eh not specifically make them pick it up, but I normally call up Kila and see how everything has been going, check out whats new and then ask any questions that I may have.

They're always willing to answer any questions and if they don't answer they are really good about getting back to you!
